A look at your Medicare ID card!

When a person's Part A and Part B coverage is approved, MediCare calls them entitled not enrolled.

 The card, in the example to the right, shows the date an individual's Part A [hospital] and Part B [outpatient] coverage started. Above this is the term -  entitled, which means when their coverage started.

    Note: there are often different dates for Part A & Part B.

The card's format was updated a few years ago:

   ● To limit identity theft by no longer showing a person's SS number, gender, or signature.

   ● To give everyone on MediCare a unique ID number called a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI). It has eleven characters with a format of —  four upper-case letters & numbers  —  three more —  and four more. See the example to the right;

   ● An individual MBI does not include the following:

    - > letters S, L, O, I, B, and Z to avoid confusion between letters and numbers, such as the number "0" and letter "O".

When you receive a card you will find it is printed on paper - so it is best to have it laminated to protect the ink from rubbing off. (e.g. at Staples) with their 8 1/2 X 11 form and cut down. Do not use a card protector, which may not be scanned in the MD office.

Need a new card? You can sign into your MyMedicare.gov account or - create one. Then you can:

● Print an official card that won't show the - between the sections!

● Order a new card.

● Review your claims.
