The cards were updated a few years ago:
● To limit identity theft by no longer showing a person's SS number, gender, or signature.
● To give everyone on MediCare a unique ID number. It is called a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI). It has eleven characters, as seen in the example to the right; it combines — four upper-case letters & numbers — three more — and four more. An example is on the right.
● The MBI doesn't use the:
- > letters S, L, O, I, B, and Z to avoid confusion between letters and numbers, such as the number "0" and letter "O".
● The card shows the date an individual's Part A and Part B coverage started. The dates are often different.
It is printed on paper - so it is best to have it laminated to protect the ink from rubbing off. (e.g. at Staples) with their 8 1/2 X 11 form and cut down. Do not use a card protector, which may not be scanned in the MD office.
